My Rating: 4/5 Stars
My Synopsis: Love and Other Words follows main character Macy, a medical resident at a California hospital. She is engaged to an older man and practically lives with him and his young daughter. Just as Macy thinks life is starting to come together, her first love Elliot walks (literally) back into her life.
This story is told in alternating timelines of the present and the past (back when Macy and Elliot were in high school). We get a glimpse into their friendship, love story, and heart break of the past as well as Macy’s enormous losses and tragedies she has endured.
In the present, we get to follow the unfolding of a long lost friendship and an unfinished love story. With a comfortable life set out before her, will Macy risk it all (and her heart) to take another chance on her first love?
My thoughts: This book was funny, sad, heartbreaking, romantic, and hopeful…all at once. I think it is rare when a book can be all of those things at the same time and be them well…but Love and Other Words does this and more! The characters are lovable and relatable. I enjoyed the skillful character development, which was enhanced by the alternating timelines of the book. I loved Macy’s character and found myself rooting for her after all that she had been through. This is one of those books that will rekindle your belief in true love and soulmates. I highly recommend it…with a box of tissues close by.
