Book Review: The Switch by Beth O’Leary

Question of the Day: If you were to switch homes with someone, where (location wise) would you want to go? Let me know in the comments below.

Thank you to NetGalley and MacMillan Audio for the gifted audio copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 Stars

Synopsis: Twenty something Leena Cotton is a hard working perfectionist living in London. After a work disaster where she ruins a big presentation, Leena is forced by her boss to take extended leave from work. Leena’s grandmother Eileen is 79 and is also in a slump. She’s newly single and less than impressed with her dating options in the Yorkshire countryside. Solution? What would happen if Leena and Eileen traded places and did a house swap?

My Thoughts: This book is delightful. It’s charming, funny, romantic at times, and feels like a warm hug of a book. I really enjoyed the refreshing take on the “swapping lives” trope in that we got to see the swap through two women’s eyes that were vastly different ages. It added a multi-generational element to the book that was endearing, fun, and usually lacking in books.

For the audiobook: I would give the audio itself 3 out of 5 stars. The narrator reading for Eileen wasn’t my favorite. I have some auditory sensitivity and had a hard time with some of the mumbling and how audible the Eileen narrator’s breathing was. If those small things don’t bother you, you will enjoy the narration which was otherwise great. I did enjoy the narrator reading for Leena!

For fans of: The Holiday (movie), multiple narrators, multi-generational stories, and books set in England.
