Book Review: Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline

I recently learned more about the real “orphan trains” that began in the late 1850s where children who were available for adoption would board cross country trains and stop at locations in search of families (but were often treated badly and used as free labor). After learning more, I was interested in reading the historical fiction novel, Orphan Train.

Brief Synopsis: An unlikely friendship forms between 91 year old Vivian who rode the orphan train in her childhood and 17 year old foster child Molly who has found herself in a lot of trouble. Molly starts helping Vivian clean out her attic as a form of “community service” and she soon uncovers the rich story of Vivian’s past. Do Molly and Vivian have more in common than they might ever suspect? What will become of their unusual bond?

My thoughts: I really enjoyed this book. I found the story captivating and heartbreaking. I enjoyed the alternating timelines between Vivian’s past and present. What I loved most was the rich historical detail as well as the arc of Vivian and Molly’s friendship. 5⭐️.
